Windows Server 2008 R2: 10 Unsung Features for IT Pros

DNSSEC.pngWe won't say Windows Server 2008 R2 is the Rodney Dangerfield of operating systems, but it's definitely not getting as much attention as Windows 7. That's understandable, of course, but it could cause IT pros to overlook what many regard as an essential upgrade for enterprises.

With that in mind, All About Microsoft blogger Mary-Jo Foley rounded up 10 unsung Windows Server 2008 R2 features, as suggested to her by Microsoft. For example: DNSSEC.

The original design of the Domain Name System (DNS) did not include security; instead it was designed to be a scalable distributed system, Microsoft officials say. Domain Name System Security Extensions (DNSSEC)was designed to help improve security by protecting Internet resolvers (clients) from forged DNS data. All answers in DNSSEC are digitally signed and by checking the digital signature, a DNS resolver is able to check if the information is identical (correct and complete) to the information on the authoritative DNS server.

Other "unsungs" include Remote Server Manager, Active Directory Recycle Bin, and Offline Domain Join.

If this sounds a little familiar, it's because TechRepublic issued a similar list--10 reasons to upgrade to Windows Server 2008 R2--just a few weeks ago.

As you might expect, there's some overlap, but it's still good information for CTOs and IT pros alike who haven't yet decided if WS08 R2 brings enough to the table to warrant an upgrade.
