Windows Server 2008: Microsoft's 'Best-Ever Server OS'
For example, over at ChannelWeb, Samara Lynn calls Windows Server 2008 R2 Microsoft's "best server operating system to date." Here's an excerpt pertaining to WS08's 64-bit nature: Although concerns over running 32-bit applications on a 64-bit platform have been expressed by some, this move by Microsoft should cause fewer pain points than when the PC world eventually transitioned from a 16-bit environment to a 32-bit one. Kudos to Microsoft for leadership in what will be inevitable: 64-bit as standard. Computerworld, meanwhile, having reviewed Windows Server 2008 R2 RTM, says that "certain customers...will absolutely find this a compelling upgrade." What kinds of customers? Here's an example: Companies that have an extensive investment, or plans a complex deployment, of Hyper-V-based virtualization. Hyper-V is now a very serious competitor to VMware -- and once you have purchased your Windows license, the price is unbeatable because Hyper-V is bundled into the server OS. Maybe it's just us and our IT-colored glasses, but it looks like WS08 and Windows 7 are shaping up to be huge, huge assets to the corporate world. What's your take?
