Virtualization 101: Understanding Microsoft's Terminology

Hyper-V logo.jpgApp-V. Hyper-V. MED-V. You've probably heard of some or all of these technologies (especially if you're a regular Migration Expert Zone reader), but do you understand the differences between them? Do you know which one(s) you should adopt for your organization?

Windows IT Pro's Michael Otey tells you everything you need to know about Microsoft's virtualization technologies--and their roles in business. Here's an excerpt:

Easily the most well known Microsoft virtualization technology Hyper-V is Microsoft's server-virtualization solution, which competes head-to-head with VMware's ESX Server. Hyper-V is delivered in two ways: It's a role in Windows Server 2008 and Server 2008 R2, and it's also available free from Microsoft in the form of Hyper-V Server 2008 R2. The latest release of Hyper-V is typically referred to as Hyper-V 2.0.

As you can see, Otey kicks things off with novice-friendly language, though he gets into more nitty-gritty later in the story. Good stuff for virtualization rookies and IT pros who just want to gain a better understanding of the differences between the products.

Of course, don't forget to check out some of our previous posts on the subject:
