Virtualization 101: Understanding Microsoft's Terminology
Windows IT Pro's Michael Otey tells you everything you need to know about Microsoft's virtualization technologies--and their roles in business. Here's an excerpt: Easily the most well known Microsoft virtualization technology Hyper-V is Microsoft's server-virtualization solution, which competes head-to-head with VMware's ESX Server. Hyper-V is delivered in two ways: It's a role in Windows Server 2008 and Server 2008 R2, and it's also available free from Microsoft in the form of Hyper-V Server 2008 R2. The latest release of Hyper-V is typically referred to as Hyper-V 2.0. As you can see, Otey kicks things off with novice-friendly language, though he gets into more nitty-gritty later in the story. Good stuff for virtualization rookies and IT pros who just want to gain a better understanding of the differences between the products. App-V. Hyper-V. MED-V. You've probably heard of some or all of these technologies (especially if you're a regular Migration Expert Zone reader), but do you understand the differences between them? Do you know which one(s) you should adopt for your organization?
