Microsoft Updates Two Virtualization Tools: App-V 4.6 and MED-V 1.0 SP1 RC

App-V diagram.pngThey may not have glamorous names, but Microsoft's latest virtualization tools can work minor miracles in your organization.

First up is App-V 4.6, which is now available as part of the Microsoft Desktop Optimization Pack 2010 (a.k.a. MDOP). In a nutshell, App-V "decouples" applications from the OS so they can run as network services. That means users can access them from anywhere. It also allows for simpler deployment of new apps, like, say, Office 2010 (which, thanks to App-V, can run side-by-side with previous versions).

Version 4.6 adds compatibility with 64-bit Windows client and server platforms. Want to know more? The Springboard Series Blog has a thorough and informative Q&A on what's new in App-V 4.6.

Next up: Microsoft Enterprise Desktop Virtualization, or MED-V. Another core component in MDOP, this virtualization tool helps organizations overcome any issues that may arise with incompatible applications.

We first wrote about MED-V nearly a year ago. The new Service Pack 1 Release Candidate (a.k.a. SP1 RC) adds support for Windows 7, both 32-bit and 64-bit, which is pretty major.

You can find out more about the tool on Microsoft's MED-V page. [via eWeek]
