How Windows Server 2008 R2 Simplifies Service-Account Administration

Here's a little-known fact about Windows Server 2008 R2: a new kind of account makes it easier to handle endpoint administration of service accounts.

That's the scoop from ZDNet Asia's Rick Vanover, who explains how managing service accounts is easier in WS08 R2. Here's an excerpt:

Windows Server 2008 R2 introduces a new type of account called a managed service account that assists in the endpoint administration. This functionality effectively extends part of the computer account in Active Directory to function like a service account. This is referred to as a managed local account in the TechNet documentation and is applicable to servers running Windows Server 2008 R2 or Windows 7.

How great are these managed service accounts? "I can almost hear Windows administrators everywhere rejoicing," Vanover concludes.
