How to Prepare for a Windows Server 2008 R2 Mass Deployment

Windows Server 2008 box.jpgSo the decision finally comes down from on high: deploy Windows Server 2008 R2--and do it fast. Now what?

If you could use a migration primer, look no further than Jabez Gan's three-step Windows Server 2008 R2 mass-deployment guide. Here's his 50,000-foot view on what you'll need to do:

1. Read the Infrastructure Planning and Design guides (IPD)

2. Gather network and server infrastructure information through Microsoft Assessment and Planning Toolkit 4.0 (MAP)

3. Deploy using Microsoft Deployment Toolkit 2010 (MDT) and/or Windows Deployment Services

For each of these steps, Gan supplies a wealth of information--starting with links to a whopping 21 infrastructure technology guides (everything from App-V to Windows Server Virtualization).

This is a great overview for CIOs wondering what kind of labor is involved for an R2 deployment and IT pros wondering how best to attack the process. Definitely worth a look.
