How to Migrate DNS Information to Windows Server 2008

Last month we talked about migrating DHCP services to Windows Server 2008. Today, let's look at another area of migration interest: DNS services.

Specifically, if your enterprise runs on older Windows DNS services or a third-party DNS service and you're planning to deploy Active Directory, you'll need to make the move to Windows Server 2008's DNS services.

TechRepublic's Scott Lowe explains how to make this happen. Here's an excerpt:

There are two ways you can migrate your DNS services to Windows Server 2008--although one is definitely better than the other. Your available options are:

* Manually copying the zone data files.
* Manually performing a zone transfer.

It is recommended that you manually initiate a zone transfer to transfer the zone data from the old server to the new Windows Server 2008 DNS server, as it usually results in fewer errors and is more complete.

Lowe then walks you step by step through a zone transfer, complete with screenshots. Very handy stuff.
