Windows 7 Spotlight: Print Management

Windows 7 logo 4.jpgWith all our focus on high-profile new Windows 7 features like App Locker, BranchCache, DirectAccess, and Reliability Monitor, sometimes we overlook features that have merely been updated--like Print Management.

For those unfamiliar with it, PM is for IT pros who manage users, printers, drivers, print queues, and print servers using the Print Management Microsoft Management Console (MMC) snap-in and the Printbrm.exe command-line tool.

Here's a rundown on what's new and improved about Print Management in Windows 7, courtesy of Microsoft's TechNet site:

  • Print migration enhancements
  • Printer driver isolation
  • Print Management snap-in improvements
  • Client-Side Rendering (CSR) performance improvements
  • XML Paper Specification (XPS) print path improvements
  • Location-aware printing
  • UI improvements to the Add Printer Wizard

All we know is, we recently deployed a Wi-Fi printer in a network environment, and Windows 7 not only detected the printer right away, but also retrieved and installed the necessary drivers. We didn't have to insert an installation CD, visit the manufacturer's Web site, or anything like that. That's the kind of simplicity we've been waiting for, well, forever.
