Windows 7 Spotlight: App Locker

App Locker.jpg

App Locker is one Windows 7 feature that's sure to make IT managers happy. In a nutshell, App Locker lets you determine which programs a user (or set of users) can run. And it goes without saying that setting application-lockdown policies can save enterprises money.

Over at Microsoft TechNet there's an Introduction to Windows 7 Security that explains, among other things, how App Locker works and why it's one of Windows 7's most appealing enterprise assets. Here's an excerpt:

AppLocker offers a new approach that can audit how an application lockdown policy will work. It provides the ability to control how users run all types of applications--executables, scripts, Windows Installer files, and DLLs. And it offers new application lockdown policy primitives that are more specific and are not subject to break as easily when an application is updated. Windows 7 also includes support for legacy Software Restriction Policy (SRP) rules, but there is no support for the new AppLocker rules on Windows XP and Windows Vista.

What do you think? Is this something you'd use in your organization? Or do you already have app-lockdown tools in place that are getting the job done? Sound off in the comments.
