Windows 7 SP1: Why You Shouldn't Wait

Windows 7 SP1.pngAs you've probably heard by now, Windows 7 Service Pack 1 will be along in a few months, and there's already a leaked build making the rounds online.

Historically, enterprises wait for at least one Service Pack before migrating to the next version of Windows--and with good reason. But is that really necessary this time? eWeek says no, and in fact offers 10 reasons why you shouldn't wait for Windows 7 SP1. Here's one excellent example:

Windows 7 is quite secure

Some users like to wait for a service pack because of the inherent security woes a Windows installation suffers from at launch. But in an unlikely departure from past events, Windows 7 is actually quite secure when compared with its predecessors. In fact, the operating system boasts most of the security features found in Windows Vista, plus some extras thrown in. It's widely considered one of the most secure operating systems Microsoft has put out. Service Pack 1 will undoubtedly deliver security improvements, but Windows 7 is secure already.

The author also points to Windows 7's XP Mode, which effectively makes the OS as "trustworthy" as XP, and the fact that SP1 is likely to be a small update--not a mammoth one like previous Service Packs.

Frankly, we couldn't agree more with this sentiment, even if a few of the 10 reasons strike a hollow chord. ("It's not Vista"? Please, let's not beat that dead horse again.)

What do you think? Does your organization insist on waiting for SP1, or do you think Windows 7 get enough field-testing and updating during the beta and RC stages?
