Windows 7 Migration Studies: Another Perspective

Windows Growth Rate chart.jpg

A couple weeks back we reported on the new ScriptLogic study that said nearly 60 percent of businesses had no immediate plans to adopt Windows 7.

Our take at the time: What businesses say they're going to do and what businesses actually end up doing are often two very different things. So don't take the study as gospel, and don't take it to mean Windows 7 sucks.

Of course, we missed the more obvious side of the story, which is that more than 40 percent of businesses do plan to migrate to Windows 7 by the end of 2010. That's a fairly significant number (historic, in fact), as noted by the ever-diligent Ed Bott, who takes the press to task for its Vista-echoing headlines (such as "Six in 10 companies plan to skip Windows").

Here's a snippet of Bott's clever, on-the-money commentary:

For today's jaded technical press and pundits, anything less than 100% adoption, overnight, is a colossal failure. Which is kind of like saying that this year's Star Trek was a flop because 268 million Americans didn't go see it.

Right on, Ed. Even we made the mistake of looking at the seemingly negative aspect of the study's numbers rather than focusing on the positives.

As always, however, we urge you to make decisions based on the best interests of your company, not on what bloggers and pundits say.
