Take Windows 7 XP Mode for a Test-Drive

By now you've heard of Windows 7's XP Mode, right? It's the virtualization solution that allows businesses to run legacy apps without having to worry about compatibility.

Starting today, Microsoft is letting interested parties test-drive XP Mode by way of a Release Candidate download. Here's the full scoop from ZDNet's Mary-Jo Foley:

The release candidate of XP Mode will work on the Windows 7 Release Candidate and the final Windows 7 RTM bits. The XP Mode RC is available for download from Microsoft's Web site and consists of two components: A 5 MB Virtual PC file and a 450 MB copy of Windows XP Service Pack 3.

In related news, Microsoft has made a few tweaks to XP Mode since the beta was released in April. For example, it's now easier to add and access devices like printers and flash drives. There's also a new virtualization tutorial that runs while XP Mode is installing.

Have you tried XP Mode yet? Or are you planning to focus your virtual-OS energies on MED-V, Microsoft's server-side virtualization tool? Let's hear from you!
