How Organizations Use Virtualization Tools to Deploy Windows 7

Windows 7 logo 4.jpgWelcome to Unofficial Windows 7 Deployment Week. Yesterday we brought you an overview of the various free deployment tools offered by Microsoft, and on Monday we looked at a pair of updated virtualization tools (App-V and MED-V) that can also speed and streamline Windows 7 deployment.

As a follow-up to the latter, Windows for Your Business blogger Gavriella Shuster posted some interesting data on how organizations have used App-V 4.6 and MED-V 1.0 SP1 RC to their advantage.

It's basically a collection of rah-rah quotes (what else would you expect from a Microsoft blog? :) from various customers, including CDW, the University of Central Florida, and Appserv. But you can click through any of the testimonials to read the full case study for that organization.

Shuster also reveals some results of a Microsoft-commissioned Forrester study on Windows 7's economic impact. Key findings include:

  • Big ROI - the return on investment for customers roughly equates to 129% over three years, with a breakeven point of approximately thirteen months after deployment.
  • Cost savings in the time IT spends in application testing, PC deployment and reduced number of help desk calls.
  • Improved remote worker experience - users have smoother connectivity and IT has better management.

Lots of good material here for anyone thinking of migrating their organization to Windows 7.
