Gartner Tells Businesses: 'Don't Skip Windows 7'

Windows 7 logo 4.jpgNot many businesses listened to research firm Gartner last year when it advised that skipping Windows Vista would be a bad idea.

Of course, that advice came after two years of non-stop bad press on the OS, and right around the time the economy was tanking.

Now, with Windows 7 just one day from consumer availability and riding a tidal wave of media love, Gartner issued this advice to businesses: Don't skip Windows 7. Here's why, according to the new Gartner report:

Gartner categorizes Windows 7 as a "polishing" release on top of the architectural change that the Windows Vista "plumbing" release delivered. Gartner analysts said polishing releases should never be skipped. "While organizations that skipped Windows 2000 and waited for XP had some problems spanning the gap, organizations that adopted Windows 2000 and tried to skip Windows XP, waiting for Vista, had a much harder time," said Michael Silver, vice president and distinguished analyst at Gartner.

This follows what we've been saying for a loooong time, which is that Vista's "plumbing" was very sound for businesses, meaning Windows 7 will simply be more of a good thing.

In any case, you should definitely read the complete report, which recommends starting your migration engines now and planning to ditch Windows XP once and for all by the end of 2012. Lots of good stuff here. [via SeattlePI Microsoft Blog]
