Microsoft Releases Vista Service Pack 2

Vista logo.jpgAfter a wee bit of unexplained delay, Microsoft has made the Vista Service Pack 2 (SP2) available for download.

We've talked about SP2 before, namely what you can expect from it, but here's a look at some enterprise-specific features and updates:

  • SP2 provides the Hyper-V virtualization environment as a fully integrated feature of Windows Server 2008, including one free instance with Windows Server 2008 Standard, four free instances with Windows Server 2008 Enterprise and an unlimited number of free instances with Windows Server 2008 Datacenter.
  • SP2 increases the authentication options for WebDAV redirector, enabling Microsoft Office users greater flexibility when authenticating custom applications using the WebDAV redirector.
  • SP2 provides an improved power management (both on the server and the desktop), which includes the ability to manage these settings via Group Policy.
  • SP2 improves backwards compatibility for Terminal Server license keys. Windows Server 2008 changed the licensing key from 512 bytes to 2,048 bytes which caused clients using older Terminal Server versions to fail. SP2 allows legacy license keys on Citrix applications to work with Windows Server 2008 Terminal Server.

You can get the full scoop on SP2 (for Windows Server 2008 as well as Vista) from Microsoft's TechNet site.

You can download SP2 directly if you'd rather not wait a month or so for Windows Update to fetch it. However, it's worth noting that SP2 requires SP1, meaning it's not an all-inclusive update--you can't just level-jump to SP2.

What are your organization's plans, SP-wise? Do you have SP1 in place already? If so, will you move right to SP2 or hold off pending further testing? Share your thoughts in the comments!

There are Vista SP2 ISO images available for download. Best bet would be to find a friend who has high-speed Internet, have him/her download and burn the ISO, then give you the disc. Good luck!
