How to Mount and Dismount VHD Files with Ease
However, VHDs can be a bit of a pain to work with. Normally, to mount and unmount them, you have to run Windows' Disk Management snap-in, locate the VHD on your drive, go through the attach/detach process, and so on. So much for automation! Fortunately, a free utility called VHD Attach speeds up the process by making it accessible from a context menu. All you do is right-click a VHD file to mount or dismount it. Specifically, when you choose Attach, your VHD will appear right alongside your physical hard disks. When you're all done, just right-click the VHD again and choose Detach. VHD Attach requires Windows 7 or Windows Server 2008. Definitely a handy item for IT types relying on VHDs for OS testing. |
We've spoken before about Virtual Hard Disk, or VHD, files, which let you run an operating system in a virtual environment via Hyper-V.
