Google Joins Call for Internet Explorer 6 to Die, Die, Die

IE8 Logo.jpgInternet Explorer 6, you're officially on notice. Weeks after Chinese hacker attacks on Google prompted Microsoft to recommend abandoning the decade-old browser, Google itself has announced it will discontinue support.

Specifically, in an Official Google Enterprise Blog post last week, the company indicated that, starting March 1, certain features in Google Docs and Google Sites will no longer work in IE6. Here's the official word:

Many other companies have already stopped supporting older browsers like Internet Explorer 6.0 as well as browsers that are not supported by their own manufacturers. We're also going to begin phasing out our support, starting with Google Docs and Google Sites. As a result you may find that from March 1 key functionality within these products -- as well as new Docs and Sites features -- won't work properly in older browsers.

2010 is going to be a great year for Google Apps and we want to ensure that everyone can make the most of what we are developing. Please take the time to switch your organization to the most up-to-date browsers available.

Amen, Google. We continue to encounter inexplicably stubborn IT departments that force users to run IE6. That's not only increases the chance of a security breach, but also saps productivity. After all, IE6 doesn't even have tabbed browsing.

Admittedly, the loss of Google Apps support won't mean much to most enterprises, but it's representative of how the tide is turning against Microsoft's aged, leaky browser. Get with the program, IT people, and get your browsers up to date.
