Migrating from Windows XP to Windows 7

As we all know, there's no direct upgrade path from Windows XP to Windows 7. However, that doesn't mean you can't migrate your users to the new OS.

In fact, Microsoft offers a tool that makes simple work of moving user files and settings. It's called the User State Migration Tool, and over at Microsoft's TechNet site there's a 12-minute video that shows how to use USMT to migrate files and settings from Windows XP to Windows 7 using a default installation.

(Sorry we can't embed the video here, but Microsoft insists on using WMV files via Silverlight.)

Needless to say, this could prove to be an invaluable asset for organizations that do decide to skip Vista.

Head to the documents area of TechNet to learn more about the User State Migration Tool.
