How to Test Windows 7 Application Compatibility

Enterprise Application Compatibility.jpg

As you learned a few weeks ago in Microsoft's Enterprise Application Compatibility video, applications that run in Windows Vista should run in Windows 7.

Of course, you'll probably want to put that to the test before you actually roll out the new OS. For that, check out the Application Compatibility Toolkit (ACT) 5.5. Among other things, ACT helps IT managers determine whether specific apps are compatible with new versions of Windows before deployment.

You can use ACT to:

  • Verify your application's, device's, and computer's compatibility with a new version of the Windows operating system, including determining your risk assessment.
  • Verify a Windows update's compatibility, including determining your risk assessment.
  • Become involved in the ACT Community, including sharing your risk assessment with other ACT users.
  • Test your Web applications and Web sites for compatibility with new releases and security updates to Internet Explorer®, by using the Internet Explorer Compatibility Test Tool.
Last, but not least, pay a visit to Microsoft's Vista Compatibility Center (a Windows 7 version is coming soon), click the Software tab, and then mouse over Enterprise Applications. You'll see a dozen software categories you can browse, from Application Development to Systems & Network Management. Remember: Most apps that work with Vista will work with Windows 7--and it's a fair bet that any that don't will be updated soon after launch.
