The Best Reason NOT to Skip Vista: Security

Vista logo.jpgThere's an interesting post over at CIO titled, Why I Didn't Skip Microsoft Vista: Security. It echoes much of what we've been saying here for the last couple months: Vista isn't perfect, but it's way more secure than XP ever was or will be, and therefore it's the logical OS choice for businesses planning a migration (and especially those not planning one).

Here's an excerpt from the article:

"The two features of Vista that are significantly better than Windows XP are security and search," says Scott Noles, Director of Technology and Education at Kinex Medical Center, a post-operation rehabilitation facility in Waukesha, Wis.

Kinex, an early adopter of Windows Vista, currently has it installed on 90 desktops, 22 laptops and is in the process of installing Vista on 170 tablet PCs.

Noles says the security features built into Vista's Windows Security Center, including the notorious UAC (User Account Control), have proved effective in protecting his users' desktops.

The author also quotes James Osteen, the Miami IT guy we wrote about last week. The upshot is that most of the IT pros who've deployed Vista did so because of its security features, and they're happy with the results. Okay, but what about the idea of waiting for Windows 7? Here's what Noles had to say on the subject: "Windows Vista is a complete architecture change, so migrating to it earlier will allow us to go to Windows 7 more effectively," he says. "We will have some of the growing pains out of the way."

What do you think? Is security by itself enough of a reason to make the move to Vista? Leave a comment below--if you dare!
