Teach Your Users These Five Password Rules

Login.pngYou're an IT person, right? So creating and managing safe passwords is coded into your DNA. But your users? Not so much. Heck, I'll bet you're still dealing with people who use "password" as their password.

To help you help them, IT Business Edge put together a brief slideshow for you to share with employees: 5 Password Rules Every User Should Follow. Here's one of them:

Regular Password Changes Are Necessary Employees are also increasingly accessing their work accounts from remote locations, so users need to be educated on the necessity of changing their passwords regularly. Note, however, that there is a difference between regularly and frequently, and it is important not to overdo the frequency of changes.

Frankly, I think the author only scratched the surface. For example, although he reminds users that longer passwords are better, he doesn't specify how long, or provide any examples of good, secure ones.

And how about links to sites that can check the strength of a password? Or help users create unique passwords?

Actually, lest I ding the author too harshly, only the slideshow is incomplete; his full post on password security has a lot more information. Check it out, then tell me some of the saddest passwords you've come across as an IT admin. For me it was...drum roll...a grandkid's name.
