Internet Explorer 8: Still the Best at Blocking Malware
Last August we reported on an NSS Labs study that lauded Internet Explorer 8 for being the champ at blocking malware. Seven months later, the song remains the same: An updated NSS Labs study has once again shown that IE8 has the highest malware "block rate" of any browser (including Firefox, Opera, Safari, and Chrome).
Specifically, "Windows Internet Explorer 8 provided the best protection against socially-engineered malware and was the only browser that improved its block rate test-over-test, successfully stopping 69%, 81%, and 85% of threats in each respective test." And it's the socially engineered stuff--the links shared via e-mail, Facebook, Twitter, and other seemingly safe sources--that's causing the most headaches these days. Much of the credit for IE8's solid track record goes to its SmartScreen Filter, which was expressly designed to prevent phishing and malware attacks. Our point, and we do have one, is that organizations clinging to IE6 (or even IE7) do so at their own risk. Even if you're not yet ready to move to Windows 7, it's time to make a browser migration. |
