Free Utility Helps You Troubleshoot BSODs
Nobody likes the dreaded Blue Screen of Death. They're maddening for end users and difficult at best for IT admins to troubleshoot. And if a BSOD occurs on Windows Server, well, you don't need me to tell you what kind of nightmares that can bring. Thankfully, there's a utility designed to help you diagnose BSOD crash data. It's called, simply enough, BlueScreenView, and it's free. Technology writer Serdar Yegulalp, discussing BlueScreenView for TechTarget, describes the utility this way: BlueScreenView iterates through all the minidump files created by a blue screen of death on a given system and produces a detailed but manageable overview of all the crash data contained in those files. Normally, spelunking these files and getting useful results from them is a chore. BlueScreenView saves you a lot of trouble by letting you pull on the most relevant information from each crash message. To put it another way, the utility scans the crash-report files generated after a BSOD, then displays information about each crash in a detailed table. That should help you pinpoint the drivers that caused the crash. BlueScreenView works with 32- and 64-bit versions of Windows XP, Windows Server 2003/2008, Vista, and Windows 7. Needless to say, Windows must be configured to save minidump files during BSOD crashes. Know of any other must-have Windows utilities for IT admins? Preferably freebies?
